The Ultimate Texas Winter-To-Spring Lawn Transition Checklist Is Here

It’s about that time, friends. The time when the weather starts to warm up and we start getting into that springtime mindset. When it comes to your lawn, transitioning from winter to spring can really be a process, but it doesn’t have to be one that stresses you out. With just a few must-do items on your checklist, you can prepare your lawn and garden the right way in order for things to flourish when spring rolls around officially. Take a look at this early spring lawn checklist and get ready for a thriving green season.

Clean Up The Yard

Before the spring season hits, we recommend you give your yard a good clean-up. Winter can bring about a lot of debris, whether from rainstorms, wind, or just winter weather. This means that you’ll want to tackle all of the fallen branches, dead leaves, and dead grass. This likely is the most time-consuming part of the process, simply because you’ll want to do the best you can to open up your yard to sunlight and water.

Sharpen Your Blades!

At least once per year, you’ll want to sharpen your blades, so what better time than right at the beginning of mowing season?! Dull blades end up wreaking havoc on your yard, tearing up the grass and even leading to potential lawn diseases. So make sure that you sharpen your blades properly in order to keep things clean.

Use A Pre-Emergent

Lawn weeds germinate in the spring, similar to most plants. So before you even allow them to take hold, you’ll want to treat your lawn with a pre-emergent. Pre-emergent helps to control the weeds from settling into your lawn, whether warm-season or cool-season grass. Incorporating this into your lawn care routine can help prevent lawn weeds from returning year after year.

Determine Whether Or Not You Need To Reseed

This step might be different depending on the lawn and the location. Usually, this would be the time to reseed or even overseed. If your lawn has quite a bit of dead grass from the winter weather, you’ll want to reseed before the spring season. Just keep in mind that once a lawn is reseeded you’ll want to make sure that you water it regularly! This is the only way that you’ll be able to make sure the grass grows in time for spring.

Fertilize, Fertilize, Fertilize!

There is a right time to fertilize and for most lawns, it’s right before spring hits. Most lawns need to be fed in springtime, but ultimately you’ll want to keep an eye on your area’s local weather conditions. This can affect the type of fertilizer you’re using as well as how much and when to apply. Applying fertilizer can be a tricky process, so we usually recommend giving us a call at Handsome Lawn Service to get the job done right.
