What Types of Weeds Should You Be Looking For?

Let’s start with the types of weeds you should expect to find in North Texas. Since there are quite a few different climates throughout Texas due to its gargantuan size, we’re going to focus on North Texas for this one. There are two major types of weeds, broadleaf weeds and grassy weeds, one of which is much more noticeable than the other.

Broadleaf weeds you’ll likely be able to spot more often, as they stick out more noticeably compared to your grass. Grassy weeds, on the other hand, can hide throughout your lawn at first, which is what makes them difficult to spot. Usually, with grassy weeds, once they become visible, it’s too little too late for your yard. When you notice them, they might be too hard to manage at that part.

How to Get Rid of Weeds in Your Yard?

Eliminating weeds before they start can be huge in helping your yard stay healthy and growing. Even if you don’t have any suspected weeds in your yard, you can still do a few things in order to prevent weeds from growing in the first place. It all starts with keeping your lawn at the right height.

1. Start by Keeping Your Grass Mowed

Mow your grass when it needs it, but also more specifically one-third above the ideal cutting height. Each grass type has different heigh requirements, so make sure to assess what type of grass your yard has. You can use this estimation below to help:

• Bahiagrass: 2- to 3-in.
• Bermuda grass: 1/2- to 1-in.
• Blue grama grass: 2- to 3-in.
• Buffalo grass: 2- to 3-in.
• Carpetgrass: 1- to 2-in.
• Centipedegrass: 1- to 2-in.
• St. Augustinegrass: 1- to 3-in.
• Zoysia grass: 1/2- to 1-in.

2. Identify Which Weeds You Have

Broadleaf weeds have different varieties, including ground ivy, dandelions, clovers, and more. These types of weeds tend to grow year-round but thrive in warmer months. Grassy weeds can be broken down into two categories, perennial and annual. Perennial weeds usually go dormant during the winter months, meanwhile, annuals are around almost all year long. 

3. Getting Rid of Weeds
