One of the most frustrating things about planting landscaping trees throughout your yard is dealing with exposed roots down the road. Landscape trees sometimes grow roots on top of the surface of the lawn or even end up causing problems to the deck or the patio. Not only can these roots affect the entire look of your yard, but they can also become a bit of a hazard when walking or mowing the lawn. While you don’t want to get rid of the tree altogether, we have a few ways to help remove some roots systems.

There are three different ways to get rid of tree roots in your yard:

1. Physically remove the roots yourself.
2. Treat the roots with chemicals.
3. Hire a professional.

When you physically remove the roots yourself, you’ll likely need some tools to help you. While this might be the fastest way to get results, it will certainly be the most labor-intensive. Taking out bigger tree roots will involve digging, and possibly even a stump grinder.  A few other tools to consider include a spade, looper, grub hoe, and maybe even a root saw. You can even use a stump grinder, which you can rent from your local hardware store, to attack the roots below the surface. Keep in mind, choosing to do this yourself might be best for smaller roots, not extremely thick ones.

Treating the roots with chemicals is another option if you’d like to take care of this one on your own. There are a few different chemical herbicide options that will work to eliminate roots altogether in time. However, if you want to pursue a more natural option, then we suggest using rock salt. Rock salt is going to be just as effective but takes a little bit longer than the herbicide. Table salt won’t get the job done, but Epsom salt or another highly concentrated salt will!

Finally, the easiest option to have roots removed from your yard is with a professional. If you don’t want to break your back in terms of labor with digging and grinding, then seek out a local stump remover in your area to get the job done. You can have professionals eliminate roots without completely harming the tree.
